SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

The Hackettstown Middle School Special Education Department, in compliance with New Jersey Administrative Code, provides quality education in the least restrictive environment to those students who are identified for special education and related services.  Emphasis is placed on facilitating inclusion in general education settings to the fullest extent possible.  Programs are assessed on an ongoing basis to insure that students’ individual needs are being met.  Each student’s program is defined in a document entitled Individualized Education Program (IEP).  A range of placement options are available at the Middle School to meet the needs of our students and they include the following:

·         General Education with supports and services

·         Assisted Support in the General Education Setting (a teaching assistant is present in the classroom to provide support to those students who are identified for this programming in their IEP)

·         In-Class Support in the General Education Setting (a class taught collaboratively by a special education and a general education teacher)

·         Resource Center Replacement Instruction (an alternate program delivered by a special education teacher in a small group setting)

·         Self-Contained Class Placement (a small group setting where students can receive replacement instruction by a special education teacher in some or all core content areas)

In addition to placement options, students who are eligible for special education may also receive one or more related services, as delineated in their IEP.  These may include the following:   Speech and Language Therapy, Individual or Group Counseling, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy.

A complete explanation of the referral process and other pertinent information regarding evaluation and determination of eligibility can be found on the district website, under the special education department link (Click here).  The following sites also provide information on topics that are relevant to special education and may be useful to both parents and educators:
